Our Dogs

The dog population in the Goodall household totals 6. Visitors to the house will know they have found the right place by the noisy reception, but fear not, they have their own section of the house which does not include the lounge. Other dog owners will know why!

Tessa (KC name Bowstones Indianna of Beaverbrook) is a black Labrador bitch, born 25 September 1996. She is bred by Ann Britton, sired by Ch Bowstones Carruthers x Sh Ch Bowstones Susanna. Tessa has had a wonderful show career as well as being a loved family pet, and on 28 January 2001 she became the proud and loving mum to 4 daughters and 1 son (by Sh Ch Trentwith Sir Winston). Tessa is now officially a veteran, and is still winning lots of prizes and enjoying life to the full, in particular being a doting Granny.

Honor (KC name Beaverbrook Sweet Honesty) is a black Labrador bitch bred by ourselves, born 28 January 2001, the daughter of Tessa (above) and Sh Ch Trentwith Sir Winston. Her name suits her so well as she is indeed the sweetest little soul whose show career started very well indeed. Honor also thoroughly enjoys agility and attends the training class on Saturday mornings which she really looks forward to.

Rosie (KC name Beaverbrook Rozetta) is a black Labrador bitch bred by ourselves, born 25 May 2004, the daughter of Honor (above) and Llanstinan Murphy. Rosie loves meeting all her canine pals at training class, which she loves and where she is a real little star! She is an outgoing and confident girl and we are so thrilled that she is here.

Benson (KC name Bowstones Morning Star over Beaverbrook) is a black Labrador dog, born 03 November 2001. He is also bred by Ann Britton, sired by Carpenny Corker x Sh Ch Bowstones Martha Black. Martha is Tessa’s litter sister, thus making Benson Tessa’s nephew and Honor’s cousin. Benson is an extremely cuddly and loveable chap, and has also taken well to showing. By the age of 10 months he had qualified for Crufts on 3 separate occasions – quite an achievement – and in 2003 he re-qualified twice more by the age of 19 months. On attending Crufts 2004 Benson made the final 6 in his class which was a huge thrill, and proceeded to again re-qualify for Crufts 2005 at his first attempt. Benson has now qualified for Crufts for life, gaining his Stud Book Number well before his 3rd birthday.

Megan (KC name Bowstones Meg For Beaverbrook) is a yellow Labrador bitch, born 21 February 2001, and again bred by Ann Britton. She is the younger half-sister to Tessa (above) being sired by Llanstinan Marcus x Sh Ch Bowstones Susanna. Dear Meg had the misfortune to be born right at the start of the terrible Foot & Mouth crisis of 2001 and as a result missed out on so much of her puppy socialisation. However, she has now started out on a show career which she is really enjoying. She is the most loving, gentle and affectionate girl you could wish to meet and we are so pleased to have her with us as part of our team. I am thrilled that by 2006, Meg has achieved 2 Best in Show Awards and numerous 1st places.

Seamus (KC name Llanstinan Seamus of Beaverbrook) is a chocolate Labrador dog born 16 June 2005. He is the newest member of our canine family and the first chocolate Labrador that we have owned. He is bred by Derek and Lynda Miles, sired by Norw Ch Birchbrook Barley Wine of Charway x Susan Said So at Llanstinan, and was one of 7 boys and 3 girls in a very nice litter. He is a real “Jack the Lad” – very funny and extremely affectionate. He has started his show career very well indeed, and we hope he will follow in the footsteps of his now best friend Benson, and have a good show career.

We have owned various rescue dogs over the years. Please take this link to visit the Tailends website, a very worthwhile rescue cause.

In Memoriam

SAM, who was our first ever dog (born 6/6/89), was a Labrador/Collie cross and Phil's "old faithful". He was with us from the start of our married life, being born one week before our first wedding anniversary, and has left us on 16 June 2003 – 10 days after celebrating his 14th birthday. He enjoyed a very active life right up until the end, loving his days out at Companion Dog Shows and winning many lovely rosettes. Despite having suffered a stroke on Boxing Day of Christmas 2002, he made remarkable progress, and was awarded Best Crossbreed Veteran just the weekend before he died. He came home from his potter around the woods and went quietly to sleep in his favourite bed, sadly not to wake up, just slipping peacefully away to play in those other fields, reunited with his previously departed friends. In our hearts forever.

SWIFTY was with us since June 1996 when we picked her out from the other dogs at the Blue Cross Rescue Centre at Bromsgrove. She was a Belgian Shepherd/Collie cross (we think) and was around 3 years old when we chose her. She had suffered fractures to her femur and tibia bones which had not received veterinary treatment and had, therefore, fused together to form a rather peculiar shape. Vets operated to place a metal rod alongside the tibia and fixed the whole thing together with 8 internal screws! She was very thin when found and was, understandably, nervous. Despite all her troubles, she grew in confidence and became a lovely affectionate dog. Her metal leg meant that she was affectionately known as our “bionic” dog.  Swifty loved to take part in Companion Dog Shows and had huge success over the years in the Rescue Competition winning many lovely rosettes and trophies. This helped her confidence no end, and it was great to see her so happy. She was, and always will be, greatly loved. She slipped away following a massive heart attack on Friday 22 October 2004. God bless sweetheart. Your exuberance and love of life is so greatly missed.

PIPPA (KC name Halfkey Stylish Lady) who was born on 2/10/90 and left us on 14 March 2002. Our first black Labrador bitch, she was a most loved member of our family. Pippa's pedigree had no connection whatsoever with any of our other Labradors and she was never a “show dog”, just a loved family pet, but she was very special and we never ever regretted her being a part of our lives. When it came to the fun novelty competition at Companion Dog Shows, though, there were few that could match her for “Waggiest Tail”! Rest peacefully, our special lady.

Over the years we have loved and lost other good canine friends. These were our dear BARNEY (Newfoundland) who tragically died at the age of 3 in 1996 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, BRUCE (German Shepherd crossbreed) who was without doubt Donna’s soul-mate, a real “clown” who provided so many moments of laughter, who left us in September 1995 at the age of 6 as a result of cancer, and OSCAR (black retriever crossbreed). Oscar came to us after he was abandoned outside our house on a very wet and windy July day. He was around 13 then, arthritic and with failing sight. He made himself right at home and gave us 7 truly wonderful months which were a real privilege, before quietly passing away after suffering a heart attack during the night in February 1993.

Donna's affix, Beaverbrook, was granted on 31 August 1999. The home page for Beaverbrook, containing information and show results for Tessa, Honor, Rosie, Benson, Seamus and Meg can be found at http://www.dgss.demon.co.uk/beaverbrook.
